The European DP Conference

The DP Centre was proud to be the ‘Platinum’ sponsor at the ‘European Dynamic Positioning Conference’ that was hosted at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel and Conference Centre in South Kensington, London on the 26th & 27th May 2010. As part of the sponsor’s package both the DP Centre and C-MAR were well represented, and with the DP Centre sending Peter Aylott, Joe Froggatt, Steven Ypma and Vinod Joseph, and C-MAR sending Jonathan Vine (Consultants), Norman Ritchie (Engineering) and Mike Hawdon (Marketing) it was a diverse selection of delegates.

The Conference kicked off at 9am on the 26th with a well received welcome address that was presented by the COO Training of the C-MAR Group, Peter Aylott. There then followed a selection of fascinating presentations given by a wide range of speakers including Pete Somner of Technip UK discussing the ‘developments and challenges for dynamic positioning’ and Mark Pointon looking at ‘DP training and Certification’. Also speaking were some old friends of the C-MAR Group, Captain Ian Smith who is now the QHSE Superintendent at Rieber Shipping and Ian Giddings who is a Technical Advisor at IMCA who were both giving their perspectives on the developing challenges for DP.

Day one of the Conference had looked at the outlook for the DP industry, the challenges facing technical development and training for DPO’s. Day 2 commenced by looking at ways to improve safety and reliability in the DP environment and as part of these presentations one of the DP Centre’s Senior DP Instructors from the Singapore office, Vinod Joseph gave a fascinating presentation on ‘FMEA’s from an Operators persepective’. Following the lunch break the afternoon session covered new applications for dynamic positioning and the first item was a case study presented by Steven Ypma who is a DP Instructor at the DP Centre London, this case study covered ‘sharing DP experiences of DO in action with the US Navy’ and told the story of Steven’s role in the US Navy job that was detailed by Gary Reay in the April edition of Engage. We thank both Steven and Joe (Vinod) for the professional and capable manner in which their items were presented.

All in all the Conference was a very successful exercise for all who attended and we look forward to taking an active part in next years event.
