This is the first of a series of updates to explain Team C-MAR's progress towards reaching the goal of climbing Mount Kinabalu (4,095m) in Borneo and S.E. Asia's heighest peak. We are doing this as part of the Sailors' Society's Asian Challenge 2011 in the period immediately before the Sea Asia 2011 conference to be held in Singapore.
There are two mountains to be climbed: firstly there is the physical one, which will be tough enough, and we will have to do that on our own gruelling efforts and without your help. This is complemented by the second mountain, the task of raising the sponsorship that we have pledged to the charity: that is where you can help us.
As these things often do, this all started over a dinner last September, in Singapore, in aid of the Sailors’ Society. The challenge offered – to climb Mount Kota Kinabalu during April 2011 – seemed like a good idea: then.
Our three Team C-MAR members (who are Graeme Bowles, Leong Heng and Henry Low) are confidently into our personnal training routines but this has to be tailored round our busy work commitments. All of us have spent all of our working lives in close association with seamen and we understand the important work that the Sailors’ Society performs. The Sailors' Society provides a personal lifeline for seafarers throughout the world. Existing to enrich and enhance the well-being of the world's 1.2 million seafarers, the charity offers practical help, emotional and spiritual support, financial assistance and family liaison through their Port Chaplains and Seafarers' Centres.
Our team efforts will go towards the charity’s work supporting seafarers worldwide.
